Deviated Septum Snoring
As we have mentioned before, snoring can be caused by several reasons, a deviated septum is also one of the deviated septum snoring causes.
There is a nasal septum in the middle of the nose, which separates the left and right nasal passageways. With the two nasal passageways, we commonly breathe with one of them, after a period of time, then switch to the other side. In this process, tissue can be shifted to one side or the other naturally. But this natural shift does not cause a problem since the bend is so slight. Of course, there will be some external reasons that cause deviated septum. Such as a broken nose, genetic influence or even as the aging process. Some of the common symptoms associated with a deviated septum including obstruction of one or both nostrils, nasal congestion, frequent sinus infections. All of these symptoms will lead to difficulty breathing and causing deviated septum snoring.
Small deviations in the nasal septum may lead to no symptoms and may not require treatment. For medium severity deviated septum, if left untreated, deviated septum snoring won’t cause any damage, but can result in fatigue, irritability or anxiety which are all common side effects of sleep deprivation. For serious situation, it may cause sleep apnea, which is a disorder causing a person to stop breathing or to have slowed breathing during sleep that lasts for ten seconds or more, and it need to take immediate snoring treatment.
Treatment of deviated septum snoring
For snoring caused by deviated septum, nose surgery is the right choice for you. But before you take the snoring surgery, you need to have an examine with a nasal speculum to found whether there is deviated septum snoring exist. You also need to check with your doctor to confirm whether surgical intervention is at all necessary to cure the condition of deviated septum snoring.
After all these examines passed, a surgery called septoplasty may be performed, which move the nasal septum back to the midline to open up the airways on each side. This is often curative of the difficulties breathing, including any snoring that may have been present.
As with all surgeries, there are risks associated with deviated septum snoring surgery. Besides common risks, there may be additional surgery be necessary to fix the hole.
